A Pre, During And Post Renovation Checklist by Handle This!
At Handle This!, we understand that picking handles and renovating your kitchen can be quite a challenge. Handle selecting, and renovation can be viewed as a stressful or laborious task, but with a little preparation, you can manage your reno project and handle selection quickly and easily.
As experts in kitchen and bathroom accessories, we’ve created a handy checklist to help you complete your kitchen and cabinet renovation with as little stress as possible. Follow our pre, during and post-renovation checklist to help you make the best selections quickly so that you can get back to the other important things in life.
1. Have a plan for your cabinets.
Before you set out on a renovation, you need to figure out if you are going to use your existing cabinetry, extend or add to existing cabinetry, or set up a brand new kitchen. Once you arrive at a decision, you need to begin putting a plan into action. For example, if you are using existing cabinets, ask yourself if you want to fill in the holes so that you are not limited to using the same size or style of handle or if you are going to keep knobs on drawers and add a second hole for larger pull on doors. If you’re changing your kitchen entirely, are you going to donate it, sell it or reuse some cabinetry?
2. Finalize your storage options.
If you’re adding a new kitchen, you want to think of storage and how you want your kitchen to function. Do you want a lot of pot and pan drawers? Do you want pull outs? Do you want glass inserts? Do you want decorative doors? Do you want a contemporary or modern look? A lot of great places to look if you are doing it on your own is Pinterest, Instagram, Houzz, or Google search! You want to get a feel of what you like before you start your design as it helps the experts see what look you like. Moreover, you won’t feel overwhelmed when shopping for your items. Also using a designer is a great way to make this process a fun stress free experience. We work closely with many great designers that will help you with your design needs.
3. Pick a handle style.
What handle style would you like? Color, design, cup, knob, or pull or how about all together? Adding the right styles and sizes along with the correct placement of handles makes or breaks your kitchen’s look and vibe.
If you want the doors to open where the stools will be, then knobs, finger-pulls or push latches will be your best bet.
If you have a living room facing your kitchen, you would want the handles not to be the same but to complement each other.
4. Select the colors.
What cabinet colors do you want? Do you want the whole kitchen to have a single color or should the upper cabinets differ from the lower ones? In this case, the color of the handles will also change as you want them to suit both colors you select.
5. Have a budget.
Knowing what your budget is will help narrow down your search and quicken the process. Having pictures in a design folder on your phone or binder is another excellent idea when shopping for handles.
6. Choose your lighting options.
Lighting plays a vital role in a kitchen. If you’re having the lighting fixtures changed, it is ideal if you know what you want. “Do you want two or three pendants or no pendants? Are you opting for pot lights? Do you prefer gold or chrome?” are just some of the questions you should have answers to as there are so many beautiful styles and colors. If you don’t have that planned, shopping for lighting could be overwhelming. Designers help in this process to bring everything together and create a special design for your kitchen.
